But after years of decorating, I’ve also learned that more isn’t necessarily better.

How I Build a Halloween Display Without Buying Everything New

One of my favorite parts of decorating for Halloween is figuring out how to make the decorations I already own feel new again.

A ghost that hung from the porch last year might look completely different hanging from a tree. A candelabra that was part of the dining room table can become part of the entryway. A collection of pumpkins can move from the front steps to the driveway.

I also like to add one or two new elements each year rather than starting over.

That’s how a Halloween collection grows naturally. Eventually, you have enough pieces to create an entirely different display every year without having to buy an entirely new collection.

And when you combine those pieces with lighting, you can make the same decorations look completely different.

A Few Things I Look For Before Buying

When I’m considering a new Halloween decoration, I ask myself a few questions:

Will I still like this next year?
Trendy decorations can be fun, but I tend to spend more on pieces with a classic Halloween feel.

Can I use it somewhere else?
A decoration that works on the porch, in the yard, or inside the house gives me more flexibility.

Does it create impact?
One dramatic piece can be more effective than five small decorations that don’t really change the overall look.

How will I store it?
This one matters more than it seems. If something is enormous and difficult to store, it needs to be worth the space it takes up.

Can I use it differently next year?
The ability to move a piece around or incorporate it into a different scene makes it much more likely that I’ll continue to love it.

A Few Smaller Halloween Additions

Not every Halloween purchase needs to be a major decoration.

Some of my favorite additions are inexpensive little details that help complete the overall experience. Think spooky window clings, black gauze or cheesecloth, small pumpkins, spooky branches, spider webs, flameless candles, unusual serving pieces, and little surprises tucked into the landscaping.

These are especially useful when you want to refresh your Halloween look without making another major purchase.

And sometimes the smallest detail gets the biggest reaction.

My Halloween Decorating Rule

Don’t decorate for the photograph. Decorate for the experience.

I want my house to look great, of course. But what I really want is for the kids walking up the driveway to feel like they’ve arrived somewhere special.

I want them to see the lights, notice the ghosts, hear the music, spot the unexpected details, and feel that little bit of excitement that only Halloween creates.

That’s why I don’t worry about whether every decoration perfectly matches.

Halloween should feel fun. A little mysterious. A little over the top.
